Evaluation: How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Evaluation: In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Throughout my ananlysis of existing music videos I noticed some generic features in my chosen genre of music. One of them being close up shots up of the artists face and another being shots of the artists in different places. Therefore we used lot of these shots in our final music video as these shots seemed to be a popular choice for this type of genre of music.

Looking at both my music video analysis, existing music videos and Goodwins theory I saw that music videos tend to have lots of close up shots of the artists face which helps establish a reccuring motif. We looked at the existing 'Just the way you are' music video and took some ideas from that such as the use of a tape in order to recreate our own version but also challenged the current music video by trying out different shots. For example we shot some of the video outside unlike the real video where it is all inside.

Another generic feature that we used in our music video was that the visuals tended to narrate or amplify the lyrics. We represented the lyrics in the music by showing the artists love towards the female character as this is what the song lyrics are about. We amplified the lyrics when it came to lines such as 'her eyes, her eyes make the stars look like they're not shining' by extreme close up shots of the female characters eyes.

Evaluation: What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

Throughout the whole process of creating three different media products I have been getting target audience feedback in order to help me produce high quality, professional work but most of all appeal to the chosen audience. I also collected target audience feedback on my final products. Collecting this information has been helpful to insure my products are of a high standard and are generic to the music.

When I collected target audience feedback for my digipack, advert and animatic I asked my target audience what they liked about them and what they would change. This meant I could keep some aspects the same but change the aspects that the audience weren't keen on. With my suitable target audiences responses in mind it helped me realise that I needed to interlink my project into one with some connections. Such as connoting pop genre music with the stars shown in the DigiPack aswell as the advert, this also interlinks with the font used. The bubbly emotion font dennotes the pop genre style of music. The target audience feedback, proved to my partner and I that we used the right style of colour and theme to fit in with the final music video.

I used questionnaires to gain my target audience feedback as they were quick to fill in so could get a variety of responses quickly and effectively. However sometime I did find that some of the answers were to brief and short and didnt explain exactly what they would have wanted to see and therefore we couldnt change to much. Therefore for our music video responses we decided to record peoples short interviews which meant that we could get more detail out of people but also means that we didnt get around to asking many people.

Evaluation: How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Research: I looked at and deconstructed existing similar products such as I'm Yours by Jason Mraz and also asked my target audience for feedback on my draft products. I looked on Youtube and watched a few videos from the same genre to see what kind of things I should add to my final music video. For the music magazine I looked through magazines such as Hello and OK to see what type of advertising was suitable for my target audience as these are the sort of magazines they said they like to read. For my digipack research I scanned existing digipacks onto the computer and evaluated them on Blogger.

I only used very basic technology in my research as it was much easier to write quick notes and drafts of products on paper and scan them on. I used programmes such as Microsoft to write up these notes and then copied them onto Blogger. This concept is very similar to what large media companies do in order to get as many ideas as possible in a short time. It meant that I could gain research and feedback in order to create a product that would please my target audience.

Planning: I created an animatic as a draft of our music video to show to our target audience for feedback using Imovie on the Apple Macs. I did this by drawing out ideas on a story board sheet, took photos of them using my digital camera and then uploaded them to Imovie. I then added back ground music in to show people what our idea for our final product is.

Construction: I used a panasonic camera and tripod when I filmed my music video which was provided the media department at school. Although the technology at school isnt as high-tech as professional media institues use it allowed us to film our work quick as I found the cameras very easy to use and upload the footage to the Imac.

When I edited the clips I used a programme called 'Imovie' which I found relitavely easy to use as I used the old 'Imove' in my AS coursework. The new Imove has a lot more of a variety of effects and transitions to use compared to the old one which made the overall product look much more professional. Using a more advanced technology meant that I could make the film flow a lot more as well. Above is a picture of what Imovie looks like when the film is in the editing stage.

Imovie allowed us to change the speed of the clips which helped to get a romantic feel across at some stages of the song. For example we wanted to create a romantic feeling at the end of the film where Jonny and Emma walk off and therefore used this tool to slow down the speed of the shot. As you can see where it says 'video effect' we could change the colour scheme of each shot which helped us to get a variety of different colours and views across to the audience which made it overall look more interesting and would hopefully keep the target audience interested through the whole song. This also meant that the music video linked in with both the digipack and the advert as they're both black and white themed.

We were able to take the sound away from the clips using the inspector tool so that we had no unwanted background noise in any of the clips which could have ruined the whole video.

Another thing that we could do was changed the brightness and contrast of clips. This meant that we could make the clips around the same brightness to get more of a flowing effect. It also meant that we could brighten up any dull shots that we filmed. For example we could brighten the shots up that we filmed in the basement.

To create a professional look on our digipack we used a programme called 'Photoshop' to edit the images we used. Although we found this quite hard to use as none of us had used it before hand and there were a lot of tools that you could play with. Therefore we only created on one the panels using it and used other programmes such as paint and microsoft word to make the rest of them.

Evaluation: For our evaluation we used the same camera and tripod to film our target audience responses to out music video. We also used screen shots of our music video from the Apple IMac and shots from the editing process to make our evaluations more multimedia and interesting. It also helped to illustrate exactly what we were talking about show a wider response to the questions.

Final music video

Final digipack

Once we produced our Digi Pack it was clarified that we couldnt use a dick as one of the four panels the digpack and therefore made a small change and produced an inside. I used a still image from the final music video and turned it black and white so that it fit in well with the rest of the digipack theme. In order to edit our product we used a programme called Photoshop to get a proffesional looking finish. In the digipacks that I had already ananlysed or looked at I found that the majority of the inside cover in the digipack was a photo of the artist and therefore decided that it would be a good idea to do this in our final product too. Overall adding this final panel made the whole digipack fit together much better and also fit with the genre of music of this song.

Final advert

This is my final magazine advert. Unlike our draft advert we decided to change it and use four pictures rather than just one in order to add some colour to the advert and make it stand out more to our target audience. Emma and I also thought of some other ideas and put them together to come up with this. Our target audience feeback told us that the draft didnt let the artists name stand out enough so I took this in to concideration and made the artists name much bigger and bolder to make sure it stood out the most. We used images of our artist to illusrate the genre of music and also took the photo from the digipack to link them both together. The same stars from the digipack were also used on the post to again link the two products together. I stuck to the same simple colour scheme as I thought it made the product look much more professional rather than just keeping the background plain and white.

Draft to final digipack

We used the same basic layout as we planned in our draft but decided to use stars instead of lines because it gave it more detail. It also added more colour to the digipack which makes it stand our to the audience more. Stars also feautre on the inside cover which means that it links in with the rest of the digipack. The name of the artist is in block writting on the final product unlike the draft but I think it makes it stand out more than small thin writing and gives it an overall more professional affect. Another reason for changing the lettering was because of our target audience feedback questionnaire where they said they think that the writting could stand out and be bolder than the draft.

This is the inside cover of the digipack. We used tapes like the draft but put 4 on it lapping over to gain more of a 3D effect. The music video also features a tape at the start and therefore links the digipack and the music video together. We decided not to use the writting on the final product as when we were making it we found out that it didnt look as good as the draft and therefore used a shadowing kind of effect instead to make it look more professional and makes the main tape stand out. We used a blue, orange and yellow background because we they are quite neutral colours and fit in with the rest of the digipack.

For the front cover we kept the same simple affect as the draft. The only think we change was the positioning of the artist. Instead of standing face on we used a photo from the side and could then use his hat as a base for the artists name which makes the overall product look more professional. We kept the front of the digipack black and white as when we looked at our mood board for this genre it seemed that a lot of their album covers were either black and white or neutral colours and these colours seem to be a generic feature. Using black and white also helped the digipack link in with the video as we use black and white affects in it. We changed the name Bruno Mars to Bruna Mars because of copy right reasons and also names the album I say as it is a frequent line in the song 'Just the way you are'.

We changed the disk and added another picture on it as some people from our target audience feedback said that they think another image is needed. By adding this image it makes the CD look more exciting and links in well with the rest of the digipack and advert.

Planning and preperation

Equipment: We booked out equiptment to film - including a panasonic camera and a tripod, and also had a tape from the media department in school to record our video on. We planned to use the tripod for the majority of the time to enable us to get a steady shot whilst filming, however we also planned to use tracking shots with a moving camera so the tripod would not be nescessary for this.

Location: We planned to record some of the video at Jonny's house - our male singer in the music video, and also use shots from outside in the back field area at school as this provided a big quiet open space where we knew we could get permission to film. We also gained permission from Jonny and his parents to use thier house as a set for filming.

Shooting Schedule: December 8th - filming at jonny's house, permission gained, no props needed, just i-pod speakers to play the song from.
End of january - beginning of february- Filming parts outside at school when we all have a study lesson/ free break time together, we just need to make sure it wont disrupt any outdoor P.E lessons or anything else.

Song title and artist name: As a final part of planning for our print products - digipack and advert, we had to change the name of our artist and chosen song title as part of copyright laws, therefore we made a subtle change from Bruno Mars to Bruna Mars and instead of using the existing song title of 'Just the way you are,' we changed it to 'I say' which are lyrics used multiple times in the song, and we also thought these lyrics were specifically relevant and a good choice for the title because it reflects how the song is about what the artist is thinking and saying about the female in the video:
'But every time she asks me do I look okay
I say
When I see your face
There's not a thing that I would change
Cause you're amazing
Just the way you are'

Production: Directors pitch

Name of Artist: Bruno Mars
Title of track: Just The Way You Are
Genre: Pop
Target Audience: Male and female, aged mainly 16-35

Outline of ideas:
The music video is based in one room of a house - a romantic setting where the artist is singing the lyrics to a female - this reflects what the song is about. We plan to mirror this idea with the male singing to the female, but maybe use more of a variety of settings - possibly out side, but still keep the romantic look to it. The music video also uses an aspect of animation which we may try and re create with a stop start motion sequence.

Intertextual References?
Our music video is mainly just going to be based on the lyrics of the song - the lyrics will almost decribe the visuals.

Locations?
Our main location will be in and around one of our houses - as the actual music video is based inside a house, with some scence maybe in outside rural areas such as in an open public park area.

What resources are needed?
We wont need much other resources apart from the video camera and settings to film, but we may incorporate a shot of the lead male playing a piano/ keyboard - similar to the existing music video, and also use a microphone so these resources will be needed.

Key shots and any special features
The planned stop start motion sequence is a special feature we plan to incorporate. Main shots will include over the shoulder shots from the female onto the male singing to her, and point of view shots from both the male and female.

Justification of ideas in relation to genre and artist
I believe the ideas reflect the genre well as they are happy and uplifting - much like the upbeat happy style of pop music, with the romantic feel representing Bruno Mars as an artist through his lighthearted but passionate lyrics.

Advert draft questionnaire

We asked 10 people from our chosen target audience questions about our draft advert so that we could get a good idea what they liked and what we should include and what we should change.

These were the results that we got:
The results were very close with only a 1 person difference between liking the close up draft and the long shot draft. Therefore when it comes to making it we can have a open choice on which one we would like to use.

90% of the people said that they think the advert links with the digi pack and the artist genre. However the 10% that said that they didnt know was because they were not sure if the artist fits in with the artist and the digipack.

60% of the people we asked said that they thought the font style makes the artists name stand out and 30% said that it didnt. Therefore we could make the writting a bit bolder in order to please the other 30% of our target audience. This question also links in to question 4 where people said the font was good but could be slighty larger to make it stand out more.

Research: Artist mood board

I found it beneficial to construct a moodboard of the artist who produced my final song choice in order to use some of the generic features that are also used in his products. This mood board conveys the strong use of different colours through out the album covers and photos shoots which shows me that when it comes to producing the final product I should use a variety of colours and shots of the artist to get a professional finish. Through this I can also see the Bruno Mars wears a lot of hats and therefore I will make my artist wear one as well to keep to the theme of the songs and genre of music.

Basic music video analysis

I have analysed both of these music videos and I believe they are the sort of songs people from my age group would listen to and this will be my chosen target audience when it comes to making my final product. By looking back at the analysis I will be able to see what I should try and include on my music video. Both of these videos have the generic features of miming and amplify the lyrics through contextual and narrative visuals which links in with Goodwins guidelines.
